In 631, after Tang tore down Goguryeo’s victory mound, the “gyeonggwan,” Goguryeo began building a wall a thousand li long on its western frontier. In 642, Yeon Gaesomun, who was overseeing the building of the wall, staged a coup, killed King Yeongnyu and his ministers, set the king’s nephew King Bojang on the throne, and made himself Mangniji. Emperor Taizong of Tang waited for the right moment to strike Goguryeo.

In 644, Emperor Taizong’s envoy Xiangli Xuanjiang came to Goguryeo. By then Yeon Gaesomun had already attacked Silla and taken two of its fortresses.

In the 4th month, the Tang vanguard under Li Shiji crossed the Liao River.

Now for the fortresses of Liaodong!

Goguryeo’s fortresses were thrown into alarm, and each one shut its gates and stood on guard.

Liaodong Fortress, the 5th month. The Tang army’s catapults hurled great stones more than 300 paces, smashing whatever they hit.

On a day of strong south wind, the Tang army set fire to the southwest tower, and the flames spread into the fortress. Liaodong Fortress finally fell.

The lord of Baegam Fortress secretly surrendered and raised the Tang flag over the fortress.

The Tang army turned its horses south once more.

There, in its path,
one mountain fortress barred its gates tight.

Ansi Fortress, a mountain fortress south of Liaodong Fortress. Refugees poured in from the fallen fortresses.

MaruMy lord, will our fortress…
fall too?
Fortress lordYour home is inside
these walls, isn’t it?
Then you, too,
are a defender of this fortress.

Taizong said that this was what he had heard about the lord of Ansi Fortress.

Yeon Gaesomun…Leave that fortress
in his hands.

At the time of Mangniji Yeon Gaesomun’s coup, the lord refused to go along and held his fortress. Yeon Gaesomun attacked it, so the story goes, but could not take it.

In the 6th month, as the Tang army reached Ansi Fortress and began its attack, a Goguryeo relief army of 150,000 came pouring in.

MaruIt’s our army!
Our army is here!

It was an army of Goguryeo and Mohe troops led by Go Yeon-su, Yoksal of the Northern Division, and Go Hye-jin, Yoksal of the Southern Division. A Yoksal was the governor of a great provincial fortress.

Go Jeong-ui, a minister old and seasoned in affairs, spoke to Go Yeon-su.

Don’t give battle; hold out and cut his supply lines.

Go Yeon-su would not listen and marched straight on to within 40 li of Ansi Fortress.

When Tang’s Turkic cavalry fought and then pretended to flee, Go Yeon-su, calling them “easy prey,” gave chase and made camp at the foot of a mountain 8 li southeast of Ansi Fortress.

Emperor Taizong of TangLower the flags.
When the drums and horns sound,

That night, a shooting star fell on Go Yeon-su’s camp.

The next morning, as the drums and horns sounded, the hidden Tang troops poured out from every side.

Amid thunder and lightning, Xue Rengui, a Tang soldier in eye-catching white, charged in with a great shout. The Goguryeo army collapsed.

When even the bridges for their retreat were cut, Go Yeon-su and Go Hye-jin surrendered with 36,800 men.

MaruOur army…
has surrendered.
Fortress lord…From now on,
we hold it ourselves.

Taizong renamed the mountain where he had stayed “Mount Zhubi,” meaning “the mountain where the emperor halted.”

The Tang army surrounded the fortress. Whenever the people of Ansi caught sight of the emperor’s banners and parasol, they climbed onto the walls, beat their drums and shouted.

MaruGo home!

Taizong was furious. Li Shiji stepped forward and spoke.

Li ShijiOn the day we take it,
let us put every man
to the sword!

When word of this reached the fortress, the people of Ansi defended it all the more stubbornly.

The siege dragged on. Go Yeon-su and Go Hye-jin, who had surrendered, told Taizong:

The people of Ansi cherish their homes;
every one of them fights of his own will.

安市人顧惜其家 人自為戰 — Samguk Sagi, 4th year of King Bojang

As the siege dragged on, the cooking smoke inside the fortress dwindled day by day. But one evening, a great noise of chickens and pigs rose from inside the walls.

They’ll sally out tonight.
Be ready!

That night, several hundred Goguryeo soldiers climbed down the walls on ropes.

The waiting Tang troops swarmed in with torches. Taizong himself came to the foot of the walls to drive his men on.

Day broke. Dozens of Goguryeo soldiers never came back.

MaruDad!
Dad…I’m back.

The empty ropes swayed in the dawn wind.

After that, Li Daozong, Prince of Jiangxia and a kinsman of Emperor Taizong, began building an earthen mound at the southeast corner of the fortress.

They built day and night for sixty days. It took 500,000 days of labor.

Inside, the defenders raised their own walls higher to hold it off. Fighting broke out six or seven times a day.

MaruI brought stones!

Whenever stones smashed a tower or battlement, they at once put up a wooden palisade in its place.

The top of the mound stood only a few fathoms from the wall, and from it the inside of the fortress lay in plain view.

Then the earthen mound collapsed and came crashing down onto the wall.

Part of the wall gave way.

As it happened, Fu Fu’ai, who was guarding the top of the mound, had left his post.

Fortress lordNow!
Take the mound!

Several hundred Goguryeo soldiers charged out through the breach, seized the mound, and held it by digging a trench around it.

Taizong executed Fu Fu’ai for leaving his post and tried for three days to retake the mound, but he never could.

Meanwhile,
autumn deepened.

Cold came early to Liaodong. With the grass withered and the water freezing, men and horses could not stay much longer, and the grain was running out.

Emperor Taizong of Tang…Turn the army
for home.

Before leaving, the Tang army paraded its troops below Ansi Fortress in a show of strength.

No one inside the fortress so much as looked out.

Then the fortress lord climbed up onto the wall.

MaruMy lord…

The fortress lord bowed to the departing emperor in farewell.

Emperor Taizong of TangTruly, you held
your fortress well.
I grant you a hundred bolts of silk.
Serve your king well.

Praising him for holding the fortress so firmly, Taizong granted him 100 bolts of silk.

Zheng TianshuThe Eastern Yi defend fortresses well;
they don’t fall easily.

The Tang army withdrew. The fighting, which had gone on for nearly three months, was over.

On the way back, carts and horses sank into the mire of the Liaoze marshes. Taizong himself loaded brushwood onto his saddle and helped fill in the road.

As they crossed the Bocuo River, a blizzard struck, and many soaked soldiers froze to death.

Having failed to achieve his aim, Taizong deeply regretted the campaign. Wei Zheng, the minister who had always spoken the truth without fear, had died two years earlier.

Had Wei Zheng been alive,
he would never have let me set out on this road.

MaruMy lord,

The fortress was held by the people within it.

Five hundred years later, Kim Bu-sik, who compiled the Samguk Sagi, wrote:

That fortress lord may truly be called an extraordinary hero.
Yet history has lost his name.
It is a great pity.

History Notes

The scenes in this story are based on these records and sites.

  1. Where Was Ansi Fortress?

The Samguk Sagi only passes on Taizong’s remark that “Ansi Fortress is rugged and its soldiers are fierce”; it does not say where the fortress stood. Today the most widely accepted view identifies it with the Yingchengzi Mountain Fortress southeast of Haicheng in Liaoning Province, China. In the late Joseon period, the idea that it was Fenghuangcheng spread among Joseon envoys traveling to Beijing, but Nam Gu-man, Bak Ji-won, An Jeong-bok and others judged this to be mistaken. After Goguryeo fell, Ansi Fortress became a base for the movement to restore the kingdom, until it was crushed by the Tang army in 671.

    The Lord’s Name

Kim Bu-sik wrote that since Taizong’s eastern campaign was broken at Ansi Fortress, its lord may well be called an extraordinary hero, and that it is a great pity that history has lost his name. Chinese histories do not give his name either. The familiar name “Yang Man-chun” first appears in the Ming-dynasty novel Tangshu zhizhuan tongsu yanyi (its earliest surviving edition dates from 1553); in Joseon it first appears around the time of the Imjin War, in Yun Geun-su’s Woljeong Manpil, and then spread through writings of the late Joseon period. For this reason, many scholars regard it as a name invented by the novel.

  3. The Battle for the Earthen Mound

The Samguk Sagi records that Li Daozong, Prince of Jiangxia, built an earthen mound at the southeast corner of the fortress, working day and night for 60 days at a cost of 500,000 days of labor, and that its top came within a few fathoms of the fortress, so that one could look down inside. The mound collapsed onto the wall and the wall gave way; Fu Fu’ai, who was guarding the top, happened to have left his post, and while he was away several hundred Goguryeo soldiers went out, seized the mound, and held it by digging trenches. The records do not say why the mound collapsed, and some scholars think Goguryeo soldiers brought it down by digging a tunnel under it.

    The Battle of Mount Zhubi

When the 150,000 troops of Go Yeon-su, Yoksal of the Northern Division, and Go Hye-jin, Yoksal of the Southern Division, came to relieve Ansi Fortress, the old minister Go Jeong-ui (whose rank was Daero) advised, “Do not give battle; hold out and cut the enemy’s supply lines,” but Go Yeon-su would not listen. Lured out by the feigned flight of the Turkic cavalry, the relief army was badly beaten by Tang troops hidden in the mountains and valleys, and 36,800 men surrendered. The Samguk Sagi and the Zizhi Tongjian say Xue Rengui wore “strange clothes,” while his biographies in the Old Book of Tang and the New Book of Tang say he wore white to stand out. Taizong moved 3,500 officials below the rank of Yoksal into the Tang interior and sent the rest back to Pyongyang. After his surrender, Go Yeon-su was constantly bitter and died of grief, while Go Hye-jin went to Chang’an.

An Emperor Struck by an Arrow?

In his poem “Jeonggwan-eum,” Yi Saek, a scholar of late Goryeo, wrote lines suggesting that Emperor Taizong of Tang was struck in the eye by an arrow while attacking Goguryeo. But neither the Samguk Sagi nor the Chinese histories record any such thing, so it is regarded as legend. According to the records, Taizong suffered greatly on the way home from the mire of the Liaoze marshes and from blizzards, and he died four years later, in 649.

  6. White Pagoda of LiaoyangThe White Pagoda in Liaoyang, China · Where Goguryeo’s Liaodong Fortress once stood (the pagoda was built in the 12th century)

    The Outcome of the War

In this war the Tang army took ten fortresses, including Gaemo, Liaodong, Baegam and Bisa, and moved 70,000 people from Liaodong, Gaemo and Baegam fortresses to China. But in the three great battles of Sinseong, Geonan and Mount Zhubi, both sides lost many men and horses, and Taizong deeply regretted that he had failed to achieve his aim. In the 5th month of that year, Silla sent 30,000 troops to help Tang, and Baekje seized the chance to take seven fortresses in western Silla. Tang went on to send troops against Goguryeo again in 647 and 648. For the events whose months the Samguk Sagi does not give (the surrender of Baegam Fortress, the arrival at Ansi Fortress and the Battle of Mount Zhubi in the 6th month, and the withdrawal in the 9th month), this episode follows the Zizhi Tongjian.

  7. Imagined Scenes

Maru, his father and mother, and the refugee grandmother are not in the records; they are imagined characters. The fortress lord’s words (to Maru and his cries on the battlefield), Maru’s questions, the scenes of the people in the fortress and the refugees, the fortress lord leading the charge to seize the mound, and the shouts of Li Shiji crossing the Liao River and of Li Daozong building the mound are invented. The story Taizong heard about Yeon Gaesomun and the lord of Ansi Fortress is drawn as a shadow play, and Yeon Gaesomun’s words in it turn that record into speech. The words of Xiangli Xuanjiang, Yeon Gaesomun, Zheng Tianshu and Go Jeong-ui, Li Shiji’s request to kill all the men of the fortress, Taizong’s words ordering the flags lowered and seeing through the night sortie, and his words on withdrawing the army and granting the silk are paraphrased from the Samguk Sagi.
