About
“Korean History: Miracle of the Korean Peninsula” is a site where you follow Korea’s history, from about 700,000 years ago, when people first came to live on the Korean Peninsula, to the Korean War, one scrolling webtoon episode at a time. We are planning 158 episodes in all, and episodes 1–40 are out now.
Start with Episode 1 → All episodes
How we make it
- Each story follows real people and events through the eyes of those who lived at the time. The “Previously” and “Characters” cards at the start of each episode help you keep track.
- All illustrations are newly drawn. The dialogue is reconstructed from historical records and research, and any invented scenes or characters that could be mistaken for the record are pointed out on the character cards or in the History Notes.
- The “History Notes” at the end of each episode gather the records behind the story (the Samguk Sagi, the Samguk Yusa, the Gwanggaeto Stele and more), the historic sites, and the points on which scholars disagree.
- The ambient sounds and music that change from scene to scene are generated on the spot by your browser, with no audio files.
Photos and fonts
The real photos in the History Notes are free-licensed images from Wikimedia Commons (CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC0, public domain, and KOGL Type 1). The “Photo credits” at the end of each episode list each author, license and original link. The English pages use the fonts Lora, Nunito, Bangers and Cormorant Garamond (the Korean pages use Gowun Batang, Gowun Dodum, Black Han Sans and Song Myung), all under the SIL Open Font License.
