Eulbul, a royal grandson who had drifted from place to place as a farmhand and a salt peddler, became king of Goguryeo in 300 (King Micheon) and drove out Lelang Commandery in 313. When King Micheon died in 331 and was buried on the Plain of Micheon, Crown Prince Sayu took the throne. He was King Gogugwon.

Around that time, west of the Liao River, Yan (Former Yan), a kingdom founded by the Murong clan of the Xianbei, was growing stronger by the day.

In the winter of 342, in the 10th month, Murong Huang, King of Yan, moved his capital to Longcheng.

And he decided to strike Goguryeo first.

There were two roads to Goguryeo: the wide, flat Northern Road and the rugged, narrow Southern Road.

The king himself led weak troops to guard the Southern Road.

Their main army’s coming from the south!

But the 40,000 elite troops led by Murong Huang came pouring in by the rugged Southern Road.

Murong Han’s vanguard struck first, and Murong Huang’s main army followed.

The Goguryeo army was badly defeated. Riding that momentum, the Yan army entered Hwando Fortress.

The king rode off alone and took refuge in Danunggok Valley.

The Yan general Muyu Ni gave chase and captured the king’s mother, Lady Ju, and the queen.

The 15,000 Yan troops who had taken the Northern Road fought the Goguryeo army and were wiped out. Murong Huang pursued no further and sent an envoy to summon the king.

Han Shou went on.

Carry off his father’s body,
and take his mother away as a captive.

When the King of Goguryeo comes of his own accord and bows down, you can give them back then.

Murong Huang took his advice. The Yan army dug open King Micheon’s tomb and loaded his body onto a cart.

King GogugwonFather’s kingdom—
I swear I will protect it.

The Yan army seized the treasures gathered over generations and took more than 50,000 men and women captive.

Then they burned the palace, tore down Hwando Fortress and went home.

The tomb lay empty, and his mother had been carried off by the enemy.

In the spring of 343, the king sent his younger brother to Yan to declare himself a vassal and offered more than a thousand rare treasures.

Murong HuangVery well.
I will return the father’s body.
…The mother stays here.

And so the body of his father, King Micheon, returned to Goguryeo. But his mother remained in Yan as a hostage.

King GogugwonFather, at last
I have brought you home.

The king’s mother, Lady Ju, spent year after year as a hostage in a foreign land.

Lady JuSayu…
are you eating well?

Year after year went by. His mother did not come back.

In the 1st month of 355, the king named his son Gubu crown prince.

That winter, the king sent hostages and tribute to Yan and asked for his mother’s return.

Murong Jun, the ruler of Yan,
at last agreed.

The Yan general Diao Kan escorted the king’s mother all the way to Goguryeo. It had been thirteen years.

Around then, Baekje was rising to great power in the south. In the 9th month of 369, the king led 20,000 troops against Baekje.

King GogugwonForward!

But after making camp at Chiyang, he was taken by surprise by the Baekje crown prince and badly defeated.

In 370, Yan, which had trampled Goguryeo, fell to Former Qin in the west.

When Murong Ping, Grand Tutor of Yan, fled to Goguryeo, the king seized him and sent him to Former Qin.

Then, the next winter,
Baekje invaded.

In the 10th month of 371, King Geunchogo of Baekje and his crown prince led 30,000 elite troops in an attack on Pyongyang Fortress.

King GogugwonDefend Pyongyang Fortress!
Do not fall back!

The king himself led his troops out and fought back.

An arrow flew in from somewhere and struck the king.

Father’s kingdom—
I swear I will protect it.

On the 23rd day of that month, King Gogugwon died.

The people buried the king on the “Plain of Goguk.” That is why he is called “King Gogugwon.”

Crown Prince Gubu took the throne. He was King Sosurim.

In the summer of 372, Fu Jian, king of Former Qin, sent an envoy and the monk Sundo with Buddhist images and scriptures.

That same year, the king founded the Taehak, the national academy, to educate the young men of good families.

In 373, law codes (yullyeong) were proclaimed for the first time: the laws for governing the kingdom were set down in writing and made known throughout the land.

In 374, the monk Ado arrived. In the 2nd month of the following year, the king built the temples Chomunsa and Ibullansa and had Sundo and Ado live there.

The Samguk Sagi recorded this as “the beginning of the Buddha’s Law east of the sea.”

With faith, learning and law, the son rebuilt his fallen father’s kingdom.

The fighting with Baekje went on even after that. In 377, 30,000 Baekje troops attacked Pyongyang Fortress once again.

In the winter of 384, King Sosurim died. As he had no son, his younger brother Iryeon (King Gogugyang) took the throne.

Iryeon’s son Damdeok
would become King Gwanggaeto the Great.

The next story is that of King Geunchogo, the Baekje king who attacked Pyongyang Fortress.

History Notes

The scenes in this story are based on these records and sites.

  1. Armored cavalry in the mural of Anak Tomb No. 3Armored cavalry in the mural of Anak Tomb No. 3 · 4th century

    342: Two Roads

According to the Samguk Sagi, the Yan general Murong Han devised a plan: “The enemy will expect our main army to come by the wide Northern Road, so let us send our elite troops by the rugged Southern Road and catch them off guard.” Murong Huang himself led 40,000 elite troops by the Southern Road and sent 15,000 by the Northern Road. Goguryeo gave the king’s younger brother Mu 50,000 elite troops to block the Northern Road, while the king held the Southern Road with weak troops and was badly defeated. The Yan troops on the Northern Road were wiped out, but by then Hwando Fortress had already fallen and the king had fled to Danunggok Valley. The battle is also recorded in the Chinese history Book of Jin. The photo shows cavalry painted in the mural of Anak Tomb No. 3 (Hwanghae Province), a Goguryeo tomb from the mid-4th century; both riders and horses wear armor.

  2. A Tomb Dug Open: Seodaemyo

Han Shou, a courtier of Yan, said, “If we carry off his father’s body and take his mother captive, the King of Goguryeo will come of his own accord and bow down.” Just as he advised, the Yan army dug open King Micheon’s tomb and carried away the treasures gathered over generations, along with more than 50,000 men and women. Seodaemyo, a large stone-mound tomb at Maxiangou in Ji’an, China, measures more than 50 m on each side, but its center has been dug out deep from the top down, and no burial chamber remains. Roof tiles inscribed “Gichuk year” (taken to be 329) have also been found there, so many believe it is King Micheon’s tomb.

A Mother Home After 13 Years

In the 2nd month of 343, the king sent his younger brother to Yan to declare himself a vassal and offered more than a thousand rare treasures. Yan returned King Micheon’s body but kept the king’s mother, Lady Ju, as a hostage. In the 12th month of 355, when the king again sent hostages and tribute and asked for his mother, Murong Jun, the ruler of Yan, agreed, and the palace general Diao Kan escorted Lady Ju back to Goguryeo. At this time Yan gave King Gogugwon the titles “Grand General Who Subdues the East, Inspector of Yingzhou, and Duke of Lelang.” The records do not say what became of the queen, who had been carried off with her. The photo shows a noblewoman painted in the mural of Anak Tomb No. 3, a tomb from the same period.

Samguk Sagi, Goguryeo Annals, 13th and 25th years of King Gogugwon
  4. Pyongyang Fortress, 371

The Goguryeo Annals record that “when the King of Baekje attacked Pyongyang Fortress with 30,000 troops, the king led out his army to resist, was struck by a stray arrow, and died on the 23rd day of this month.” The Baekje Annals say that King Geunchogo led 30,000 elite troops together with the crown prince, and that the King of Goguryeo fought hard but was struck by an arrow and died. About 100 years later, King Gaero of Baekje wrote in a letter to the Northern Wei that “the head of Soe (King Gogugwon) was cut off,” but Kim Bu-sik added that this was “an exaggeration.” King Gogugwon is said to have enlarged Pyongyang Fortress in 334, and many believe this Pyongyang Fortress was in the area of present-day Pyongyang.

    Buddhism Arrives

In the 6th month of 372, Fu Jian, king of Former Qin, sent an envoy and the monk Sundo with Buddhist images and scriptures. In 374 the monk Ado arrived; the Samguk Yusa says he came from Eastern Jin. In the 2nd month of 375, the king built Chomunsa (Seongmunsa) Temple for Sundo and Ibullansa Temple for Ado to live in, and the Samguk Sagi recorded this as “the beginning of the Buddha’s Law east of the sea.” Where the two temples stood has not yet been determined. The photo shows a Goguryeo gilt-bronze Buddha inscribed with the words “7th year of Yeonga” (often taken to be 539).

  6. The Taehak and the Law Codes

In 372, King Sosurim founded the Taehak to educate the young men of good families. It is the first state-run educational institution in Korea on record, and is thought to have taught the Confucian classics mainly to the sons of aristocrats. In 373 he proclaimed law codes (yullyeong) for the first time. “Yul” were laws on crimes and punishments, and “ryeong” laws on the institutions of the state, but no articles of Goguryeo’s codes survive. Scholars see this as an effort to bind customs that differed from group to group into a single written law, so as to govern the kingdom with the king at its center.

Hwando Fortress, Gungnae Fortress, and the Imagined Scenes

In the spring of 342, King Gogugwon rebuilt Hwando Fortress and built Gungnae Fortress. Gungnae Fortress on the plain (today’s Ji’an, China) and Hwando Fortress (Shanchengzi Mountain Fortress), a mountain fortress about 2.5–3 km to its north, are thought to have formed a pair: one for everyday life, the other for holding out when enemies came. Both fortresses were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. Meanwhile, the mother and son on the fortress wall, the mother’s life as a hostage, Gubu staying by his father’s side at Pyongyang Fortress, the king’s last words, and King Sosurim’s vow are imagined scenes not found in the records.
